The World Contraceptive Day That It Was!!!!
Yesterday Friday 26th September 2014, over 2500 young people from the five divisions of Uganda’s capital Kampala came together to celebrate and commemorate the WORLD CONTRACEPTIVE DAY under the theme; It’s your Life, It’s your future; Know your options.
The event was held at KATI KATI Restaurant and was organized by various partners working Togther under the leadership of save the children international. The partners included; Uganda Youth and Adolescents Health Forum (UYAHF), DSW, Reach A Hand Uganda, Marie stoppes, Restless development, SRH ALLIANCE, ACODEV, Ministry of Gender, Naguru Teenage Centre, Reproductive Health Uganda, Community Health Alliance Uganda among others.
The more than 2500 young people came from over 60 youth groups from and around the capital Kampala.
The event was an opportunity for young people to showcase and exhibit their work especially what they do best, network with various CSOs that work with young people and most importantly access and utilize non discriminatory, and confidential youth friendly Sexual Reproductive Health Services and Information that included among others, HTC, information on various contraceptive methods, breast cancer screening, cervical cancer screening, safe male circumcision, male and female condom use demonstration and distribution, among others.
The event was also filled with lots of fun and entertainment including, comedy, acrobatics, music, dance dram from both the different youth groups and Big artists like GNL Zamba, Moris, Bigtrill who entertained the crowds. “KIMERE” (food and refreshments were also in excess).
What was very amazing about the day is that over 1000 young people tested for HIV got to know their status and received counseling, over 2000 sought information on the various contraceptive methods and how they work, while other sought information on their SRH services, over 2000 got to learn how to correctly and consistently use both make and female condoms and also got free condoms to take home. Over 100 young women were screened for both breast and cervical cancer, while close to 100 young men got circumcised (safe male medical circumcision). Many young people Leo turned up to donate blood with an aim of saving a life.
Young people pledged to always keep it safe, as they constantly shouted out the ” If it’s not on; It’s not Safe” slogan, literary meaning that for sex to be safe, one has to correctly and consistently use a condom.
Mr. Mondo Kayateka the Ass. commissioner for Youth affaires from the ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development was the chief guest and in his remarks, he pledged government support to the young people’s development and requested young people to maintain the innovativeness, creativity, enthusiasm and energies they exhibit.
